Hobbiton Movie Set
Experience the enchanting world of Hobbiton on a guided walking tour through the iconic movie set nestled in the rolling green hills of Waikato. Originally discovered by Sir Peter Jackson during an aerial search for filming locations, the Alexander family sheep farm was transformed into the beloved Shire™ of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies.
Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll explore the 12-acre set on foot, uncovering intricate film set details and visiting the most iconic locations, including Bag End, the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. As you stroll through the lush landscape with the Kaimai Ranges as your backdrop, your guide will share behind the scenes insights about how this cinematic masterpiece came to life.
Venture into Bagshot Row™ to step inside an authentic Hobbit Hole interior, faithfully designed by the original film crew. The interiors offer a rare glimpse into daily life in the Shire, down to the finest handcrafted detail.
Your adventure concludes at the Green Dragon™ Inn, where you’ll enjoy a complimentary beverage from the exclusive Hobbit™ Southfarthing™ range, served in the very pub where Hobbits gathered on screen.
This fully immersive tour combines storytelling, film history, and breathtaking landscapes, perfect for fans, families, and first time visitors alike.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long is the Hobbiton tour?
• From Auckland: Our guided day trips typically run 8 hours in total, including the two hour coach ride each way and free time at the café / shop.
• Onsite only: Allow about 2.5 hours door-to-door from The Shire’s Rest, a 10 min coach each way plus a 90-min guided walk and a drink in the Green Dragon.
Should I book our Hobbiton tour in advance?
Absolutely. Summer departures often sell out weeks ahead and same-day slots are very rare outside winter.
What Hobbiton film landmarks will I see and experiance?
Expect to wander past 44 Hobbit Holes, the Party Tree, the Mill & stone bridge, Bag End’s lookout and finally step inside the Green Dragon Inn for a Southfarthing ale or ginger beer.
What time of year is best to visit Hobbiton?
Hobbiton runs year-round, but the site is busiest in peak Kiwi summer (Dec – Feb). For thinner crowds and softer light, aim for spring (Sep – Nov) or autumn (Mar – May). Tip: early morning or late afternoon departures are ideal for photos!
Was the actual Lord of the Rings shot here?
Yes. Peter Jackson built the 12-acre set here in 1999 for The Lord of the Rings and rebuilt it permanently for The Hobbit trilogy, leaving the façades in place so visitors can wander the Shire today.
Will my phone work at Hobbiton, or is there Wi-Fi on-site?
Public Wi-Fi isn’t available, and mobile reception is patchy as parts of the 12-acre set sit outside reliable coverage
Do the Banquet or Lunch tours cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Yes. The Evening Banquet and Tour lunch combo and Shire’s Rest café provide V / VGN / GF / DF dishes. Note you may need to state your preference when booking.
