Hands-on beginner workshop at Wētā Workshop Unleashed on creating horror prosthetics, including scars, scrapes and fake blood, inspired by Fauna.

Tour Overview

Step into the role of a practical effects artist in Wētā Workshop Unleashed’s Intro to Scars and Scrapes workshop, a hands-on session focused on creating horror-style prosthetic effects.

Guided by the Wētā Workshop Unleashed crew, you’ll learn beginner techniques used to build convincing movie injuries, from sculpting and layering a prosthetic to colouring it so it reads as a fresh, realistic wound. The workshop is inspired by scenes from the faux horror movie Fauna, giving the session a clear screen-based theme while keeping the focus on practical making skills.

You’ll also mix your own fake blood and see how simple materials and careful application can turn an idea into a ghastly effect. All materials are provided, and the small class size allows for close guidance as you work through each step.

No creative experience is needed, so this workshop suits complete beginners as well as anyone curious about how prosthetic makeup effects are made for film scenes. By the end, you’ll have tried the basics of special effects artistry for yourself and receive a Certificate of Creativity upon completion.

If you’ve ever wondered how film crews create scars, scrapes, and blood effects that look convincing on screen, this workshop offers a direct introduction to the process.
