Travel across Tikapa Moana to Rotoroa Island for walking tracks, native wildlife, swimming, and a museum exploring the island’s rehabilitation past.

Tour Overview

Travel through Tikapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf, to Rotoroa Island, a day trip or longer stay that feels removed from the city without being far away. The journey itself is part of the experience, with wide gulf views on the way to this island sanctuary.

On Rotoroa Island, established walking tracks lead across open fields, native bush and sandy shorelines. Since becoming predator free in 2014, the island has become home to native wildlife roaming freely, including kiwi, takahē and tīeke. The island’s sheltered bays and clear waters also offer time for swimming or snorkeling, while quiet sandy beaches provide space for picnics and a slower pace.

Rotoroa Island also has a distinct human story. Its past as a rehabilitation centre is explored through the award-winning museum and exhibition, alongside historic and heritage buildings that help explain the island’s earlier role. From different points around the island, views stretch across the gulf from Waiheke to Coromandel.

Practical facilities on the island include a gift shop, freshwater drinking fountain, toilets and electric barbeques, making it easy to spend several hours exploring on foot, swimming, or simply settling in by the shore.
