Tour Overview

Embark on a serene kayaking journey to the historic Motukorea, also known as Browns Island, located in the heart of Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. This tour is designed for adventurers of all skill levels, offering a unique opportunity to explore one of the most intact volcanic sites in the Auckland Volcanic Field. Accessible only by kayak or private boat, Motukorea provides a tranquil escape from the bustling city life.

Upon landing on the shores of Browns Island, you'll be invited to hike to the island’s summit. As you ascend, take in the expansive views of the surrounding gulf, which serves as a stunning backdrop to the island’s rich past. The history of Motukorea is deeply intertwined with Auckland’s founding figures, such as Sir Logan Campbell and William Brown. The summit hike not only promises breathtaking views but also a chance to visit the three pa sites, remnants of Maori fortified villages that speak volumes of the pre-European Maori cultivation and settlement.

After the walk, enjoy some light refreshments in this picturesque setting before the gentle paddle back to the city. This tour not only offers physical engagement but also a profound connection with Auckland's natural and historical heritage, all within a day’s adventure.

Note that free pick-up and drop-off services from Auckland City Center are available, making this experience effortlessly accessible for both locals and visitors. What To Expect

Motukorea / Browns Island has a fascinating history. It was heavily cultivated by local Maori pre-European arrival and was the first home of Sir Logan Campbell (mayor of Auckland) and William Brown (1st Auckland member of parliament). These men are considered the founders of Auckland city. On arriving at Motukorea, we trek to the summit, taking in the panoramic views as we go and learning about the island’s history. There are three ancient pa sites (Maori fortified village) on the island. The largest occupying the slopes of the main scoria cone. Light refreshments are provided on the island before we head back into the Auckland skyline.
