Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves Small Tour from Auckland

Travel from Auckland through the New Zealand countryside to two of the country’s best-known attractions in one day. The drive itself sets the pace, with open rural views on the way south before the tour reaches Waitomo Caves.

At Waitomo, a guide explains the history of the caves and the life cycle of the glowworms before you head inside. The limestone formations and the glowworm display create a dark, star-like setting overhead. A boat ride through the caves adds a quieter part of the visit, as you float beneath the glowworm-lit ceiling and take in the cave from the water.

The journey then continues to Hobbiton in Matamata, passing rolling hills on the way. There is a lunch break at Shire’s Rest Café, with lunch at your own expense, before the movie set tour begins. From there, you board the Hobbiton bus and explore the set with a guide, visiting Hobbit houses and other filming locations while hearing behind-the-scenes stories and historical details.
