Tour Overview

Travel from Auckland to the Waitomo region on a private day trip centred on the Spellbound Glowworm Cave and Explorer Tour. The drive to Spellbound Caves takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, with your guide introducing the day as you leave New Zealand’s largest city and head through the countryside.

At the caves, join a small group experience of up to 11 guests. A short van ride takes you across a limestone-studded farm before you walk into the Mangawhitikau Gorge. Inside the Glowworm Grotto, thousands of glowworms create a soft bioluminescent display overhead while you move quietly through the cave on a 20-minute boat ride. Your guide explains the glowworms’ life cycle and behaviour, along with the geology and history of the cave system.

The tour continues along an ancient dry riverbed to Te Ana o Te Atua, the Cave of the Spirit. Here, the focus shifts to limestone formations, fossils, natural sinkholes, stalactites and stalagmites found through the cave passages. Between caves, there is time for a tea or coffee break in peaceful surroundings.

After the cave visit, stop in Otorohanga for lunch at a local eatery, at your own cost, before the return drive to Auckland, around 3 hours, ending with hotel drop-off.
