Sweeping black sand, powerful surf, and dramatic cliffside views make Muriwai Beach a striking destination on Auckland’s wild west coast. Just 45 minutes from the city, this untamed stretch of coastline is a favourite for surfers, photographers, and nature seekers alike.
The beach extends for kilometres, offering plenty of space for walking, blokarting, or simply soaking in the rugged beauty of the Tasman Sea.
At the southern end, the Muriwai Gannet Colony is a major highlight — home to thousands of nesting gannets from August to March. An easy walking track leads to viewing platforms with spectacular vantage points over the birds and the sea.
With ample parking, public facilities, and nearby cafés, Muriwai combines raw natural beauty with visitor-friendly access. While the surf is best left to experienced swimmers, the area’s trails, lookouts, and wildlife make it one of the most rewarding coastal day trips from Auckland.

Local Tip: Gannet Colony Best Time
Visit between August and March to see the gannets nesting. Late afternoon offers the best light for photography and usually fewer crowds.
Local Tip: Clifftop Walk
The Muriwai Clifftop Track is a short uphill walk that gives you incredible views over the coastline and gannet colony. It is less crowded than the main viewing platforms.
Local Tip: Check the Tide
At low tide, you can explore the rocky platforms and sea caves at the southern end of the beach. These disappear quickly once the tide starts coming in.

Muriwai is often windy which is great for kite surfers and blokarts. Bring layers of clothing and leave the sun hat at home unless it fits snugly.

After your beach visit, stop by Sand Dunz Café near the main carpark. It is a local favourite for a reason with good coffee and generous meals.
