Long Bay Beach is a spacious, family-friendly stretch of golden sand located at the northern end of Auckland’s North Shore. Set within the beautiful Long Bay Regional Park, the beach is perfect for swimming, picnicking, and leisurely coastal walks. Its calm, shallow waters and gentle waves make it ideal for kids and casual swimmers, while the expansive grassy areas just behind the beach provide plenty of space to spread out and relax.
The park is well-equipped with public toilets, barbecues, picnic tables, and shade from native pōhutukawa trees. A coastal walking track runs north from the main beach, offering scenic clifftop views and access to more secluded coves and bays. On summer weekends, Long Bay is popular with locals, but its size means it rarely feels crowded.
With safe swimming, great facilities, and room to breathe, Long Bay is one of Auckland’s best spots for a full day by the sea.
Local Guide Tips
Local Tip: Coastal Walk
The Long Bay to Granny’s Bay Track is a scenic clifftop walk that takes around 30 minutes each way. Along the way, you’ll find stunning views and quieter beaches that feel like hidden treasures.
Local Tip: Picnic Perfect
Arrive early to claim a spot under the shady pōhutukawa trees. The large grass area behind the beach is ideal for picnics, games, and family gatherings.
Local Tip: Tide Pool Exploring
At low tide, the rocks near the northern end of the beach reveal tide pools filled with small sea creatures. It’s a fun activity for kids and a good reason to bring reef shoes.
Local Tip: BBQ Ready
Long Bay Regional Park has several public barbecue stations. Bring your own supplies and make a day of it — just note they are first come, first served.
Local Tip: Dog Access
Dogs are welcome in the park but must be on a leash in most areas. There is an off-leash zone inland behind the beach where they can run more freely.
