Browns Bay Beach is a relaxed, family-friendly spot on Auckland’s North Shore, known for its safe swimming, golden sand, and laid-back coastal charm. Popular with locals year-round, the beach offers plenty of space to unwind, whether you're into sunbathing, walking the dog on the foreshore, or paddling in the calm waters of the Hauraki Gulf.
A wide beachfront reserve lines the sand, complete with shaded picnic areas, a children’s playground, and a skate park. Just steps from the shore, the Browns Bay village hub offers casual cafés, bakeries, and restaurants with sea views. Perfect for a post-swim coffee (or beer) or fish and chips on the grass.
With easy parking and public toilets, Browns Bay is a convenient and welcoming choice for beachgoers of all ages. It’s also a great starting point for a scenic stroll along the North Shore Coastal Walkway.

Local Guide Tips
Local Tip: Best Spot for a Swim
The water at Browns Bay Beach is usually calm and great for swimming, however, I suggest swimming towards the southern end further away from the boat ramp.
Local Tip: Great for Picnics
The grassy beachfront reserve has plenty of room, with picnic tables and natural shade. It is perfect for families or a relaxed lunch by the sea.
Local Tip: Playground & Skate Park
Kids love the large playground and skate park just behind the beach. It is well-maintained and a popular weekend spot for locals.
Local Tip: Ice Cream, Coffee and some great Beer nearby
Cross the road to grab an ice cream or a flat white. Deep Creek Brews & Eats and White Flower Café are popular choices along the main strip.
Local Tip: Dog-Friendly Access
Dogs are welcome during designated hours, typically before 10am and after 5pm in summer. Always check local signs, or council website for seasonal restrictions.
Local Tip: Scenic Clifftop Walk
Follow the Browns Bay to Rothesay Bay walkway at the southern end of Browns Bay. Just walk across the small foot bridge and you will come along some steep stairs/walkway. Follow your nose. It's a great coastal track that winds above the cliffs with sweeping views of the Hauraki Gulf. It’s an moderately easy, paved route that links several East Coast Bays.
